How a gabion retaining wall works
A gabion retaining wall resists soil pressure through its own weight. The stone-filled units are free-draining and tolerate some settlement, which suits many embankment, roadside and hillside conditions. Each wall must still be designed for its height, loading, soil, groundwater and foundation.
What the design should define
- Wall height, batter or stepped profile and length
- Foundation level and bearing conditions
- Drainage behind the wall and at the toe
- Backfill material and compaction
- Geotextile or filter requirements
- Surcharge loads and water conditions
We build to the drawings and specification supplied by the project designer or authority. Engineering design is not included unless agreed in writing.
Our scope can include
- Gabion units - see gabion boxes
- Basket assembly, placing, filling and lacing
- Labour-only installation - see gabion labour supply
- Backfill and finishing as specified
