What does GI mean for a gabion box?
GI stands for galvanised iron. In gabion work it refers to steel wire that carries a zinc coating to slow down corrosion. The zinc layer is the corrosion protection, so the coating requirement written into your specification matters as much as the wire diameter.
Where GI gabion boxes are commonly considered
- Retaining walls and embankment support where site conditions are not chemically aggressive
- Riverbank, stream and canal protection, subject to flow conditions and design
- Erosion control on slopes and around drainage structures
- Landscape and boundary walls
Service life depends on the coating, the water and soil chemistry, abrasion and exposure. We do not state a design life on this website; the designer or project authority should set the coating requirement for the actual site.
GI or PVC-coated: how to decide
| Consideration | GI (zinc-coated) | PVC-coated over zinc |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosion protection | Zinc coating on the wire | PVC layer over zinc-coated wire |
| Typical consideration | General civil applications | More demanding or aggressive environments |
| Cost | Usually lower per unit | Usually higher per unit |
| Decision basis | Project specification and site conditions | Project specification and site conditions |
This is a general comparison, not a design recommendation. See PVC-coated gabion boxes for the coated option.

Frequently asked questions
Is a GI gabion box suitable for my site?
That depends on the design, water and soil conditions and the specified coating. Check with your designer or consultant and share the specification in your enquiry.
Can I order only GI gabion boxes without installation?
Yes, state 'supply only' in the enquiry. Installation can be quoted separately through gabion labour supply.
Do you publish a GI gabion box price list?
No. Rates depend on size, wire, coating, quantity and destination, so they are quoted per enquiry.
