Gabion Box Sizes and Specifications

Use this guide to prepare a complete gabion enquiry. Dimensions and technical details must come from your BOQ, drawings or project specification - this page tells you what to include so the quotation is accurate.

Dimensions are only the starting point

A gabion is described by length, width and height; a mattress by length, width and thickness. Several sizes are often used on one project. Confirm whether the dimensions are for the finished filled unit or the nominal supplied unit, and note any tolerances in your specification.

Mesh and wire terms explained

  • Woven (double-twisted hexagonal) mesh - wires twisted in pairs to form hexagonal openings.
  • Welded mesh - wires welded at intersections to form square or rectangular openings.
  • GI - zinc-coated steel wire. PVC-coated - PVC over zinc-coated wire.
  • Lacing wire - the wire used to join panels and units on site.
  • Diaphragm - an internal panel that divides a unit into cells.

Which mesh type and coating are available from us is confirmed in the written quotation. Ask your designer to confirm the product specification if you are unsure.

How to write a gabion enquiry line

Use one consistent unit system and one line per size. A model format is shown below; replace the bracketed values with the figures from your BOQ.

[Length] x [Width] x [Height] [unit] | Qty: [number] | Mesh: [type, opening] | Wire: [diameters] | Coating: [GI / PVC] | Accessories: [list] | Delivery: [site, PIN code]

Attach drawings when you have stepped walls, non-standard panels or site-specific arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Which gabion size should I choose?

Size is set by the structure design and stone size, not by price. Use the dimensions in your drawing or BOQ.

Do I need a technical data sheet?

If your specification requires one, say so in the enquiry and we will confirm what documentation can be provided.

Next step

Use the quotation form or contact page and include the drawing or BOQ, quantity, specification and site location. Where details are not final, say so - we will tell you what is needed to prepare a proper quotation.

Have a BOQ or drawing ready?

Send the specifications and project location so we can review the actual requirement.
